Alex Albanese, a member of the Florida orchestra since the 1980s, died after a series of strokes earlier this year
The Sarasota Orchestra in Florida, US, has announced the death of its long-standing double bassist, Alex Albanese.
Albanese was born in Pittsburgh, PA. Following music performance studies at Miami University in Ohio and Cincinnati Conservatory, he joined the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony (now Florida Orchestra) to play a one-year position in 1982.
At the invitation of the principal of the Florida West Coast Symphony, Grace Sexton, Albanese auditioned for the Sarasota Orchestra. He became a section member and subsequently served six years as assistant principal bass, before moving back to the section.
He freelanced extensively, appearing with the Naples Philharmonic, Southwest Florida Symphony, as well as other professional orchestras in Florida. In Mexico, he performed one season with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Aguascalientes. He performed with Seaside Music Theater, on national and international tours, and across 19 different cruise ships.
In addition to his performance career, Albanese also worked as the operations manager for the youth ensembles with the Southwest Florida Symphony in Fort Myers.
Albanese suffered a stroke in February 2025, causing left-side paralysis and mobility challenges. A second stroke two months later further impaired his mobility, cognition and Type 2 diabetes management. A GoFundMe page was established to cover his medical and living expenses.
’Alex’s musicianship, dedication, and enduring commitment to Sarasota Orchestra leave a lasting legacy,’ said the Sarasota Orchestra on social media. ’Our community has lost a passionate artist and colleague whose impact will not be forgotten.’
