The Tianjin Juilliard School has announced the appointment of Chinese cellist Ray Wang to its cello faculty, teaching as part of its graduate studies and pre-college programmes.

‘It is a great honour to become part of the Tianjin Juilliard family, an eminent institution distinguished by its dedicated faculty and staff,’ said Wang. ‘I look forward to sharing ideas and experiences with students, as we grow together as part of this vibrant, multicultural community.’

Wang has previously served as head of strings and head of the junior music department at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he was recently conferred the title of professor emeritus.

He also teaches on the faculties of the Hong Kong Baptist University and Chinese University of Hong Kong, and has previously taught at institutions including the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Tainan University of Technology, Taiwan Normal University and Fu Jen Catholic University.

Wang is a founding member of the Hong Kong Virtuosi Society and was elected as a founding director of the String Music Society of the China Musicians Association in 2021, representing Hong Kong.

As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras including the Saigon and Philippine philharmonic orchestras, the Taipei and Guangzhou symphony orchestras, the Macao Orchestra, Solistas de la Habana and the Cellistra ensemble.

‘We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ray Wang to Tianjin Juilliard’s cello faculty,’ said Katherine Chu, the dean of the Tianjin Juilliard School.

‘Recognised as one of the most respected pedagogues in Greater China and beyond, Ray Wang brings an impressive record of mentoring generations of cellists who are now performing and teaching at prestigious institutions around the world.

‘With a distinguished career spanning concert stages worldwide, his extensive experience as a soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber musician will be an invaluable asset to Tianjin Juilliard. He shares our deep commitment to student well-being, stewardship of music and service to the community — values we hold dear at Tianjin Juilliard.

‘I am thrilled to welcome Ray and look forward to working alongside him.’
