According to a report by Deadline, US playwright, author and television writer Itamar Moses has sold a dramatic feature pitch for Stradivarius to Netflix. It will be set in Northern Italy in the 18th century and will follow as ‘the world’s two best violin makers battle it out to build the perfect instrument’.

Moses, who received the 2018 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for The Band’s Visit, is reportedly set to adapt the story himself. Among his television credentials, he has written for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, WGN’s Outsiders, and Men of a Certain Age.

Stradivarius will not be Moses’s first work to delve into the world of classical music, as his 2005 play Bach at Leipzig centres around the composer’s audition to become the new organist of the Thomaskirche.

Deadline also revealed that award-winning Swiss–Austrian director Edward Berger is set to direct the dramatic feature. His films include All Quiet on the Western Front, for which he won an Academy Award for Best International Film as well as a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination and three British Academy Film Awards, and Conclave, for which he received a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director.

Netflix has not yet commented on the acquisition.
