Chinese violinist Jiamin Wang has been appointed principal second violin of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO). She was previously a member of the orchestra’s first violin section.

At the age of twelve, Wang entered the Shanghai Conservatory where she studied under Xuan He and graduated in 2009. As a soloist during her studies, she performed with the the Singapore Festival Orchestra, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2012 she began studying at New York’s Bard College Conservatory of Music on a full scholarship. Her teachers included Weigang Li and Shmuel Ashkenasi. 

Wang joined the DSO in 2013. During her time in the orchestra, she continued performing as a chamber musician, including in the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings and at the Great Lakes Chamber Festival. 

She plays on a 1759 Giacomo Zanoli violin. 

Alongside Wang, three other musicians joined the orchestra: Helen Wargelin as second horn, Lorenzo Robb as fourth horn, and Lily Josefsberg as piccolo and flute.
