The Mason Gross School of the Arts at New Jersey’s Rutgers University has announced the appointment of Canadian violinist Christina Bouey as Assistant Professor of Violin. She will begin the new role on 1 September 2025, departing from her position as Assistant Professor of Violin at Ithaca College in New York.

Bouey is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Boston Conservatory, having studied with Glenn Dicterow, Lisa Kim, Laurie Smukler, Nicholas Mann and Irina Muresanu. She performs on a 1790 Storioni violin on loan.

Bouey is the founding first violinist of the Ulysses Quartet, established in 2015, which is currently the quartet-in-residence at the WGBH radio station. The ensemble has won numerous prizes, including the grand prize of the Fischoff Competition, first prize at the Schoenfeld International String Competition and second prize at the Osaka International String Competition. The ensemble was the Juilliard School’s resident string quartet from 2019-22, and its members were recognised as Lisa Arnhold Fellows at the school.

Bouey won first prize at the Waldo Mayo Violin Competition, subsequently making her concerto debut at Carnegie Hall, and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Greenwich Symphony, Bergen Symphony and Tonkünstler Ensemble. She has served as concertmaster of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and was appointed as concertmaster of Albany Symphony in December 2024.

Bouey’s appointment mirrors the path of Arnold Steinhardt, the first violinist of the acclaimed Guarneri Quartet, who held the same position and likewise performs on a Storioni violin.

‘I am thrilled to be joining the Mason Gross School of the Arts and excited to help guide the next generation of musicians,’ said Bouey. ‘While I have had three fulfilling years at Ithaca College, this position at Rutgers is a dream come true. It is an honour to be part of such a dynamic faculty and I look forward to contributing to the school’s legacy.’
