The cellist popped the question after performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the Sequoia Symphony
Wholesome news alert! Forget Jumbotrons, forget secluded locations – US cellist Sterling Elliott has proposed to his girlfriend in style, following his solo appearance with the Sequoia Symphony in Visalia, CA.
Elliott, a former recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and Sphinx Competition winner, had finished performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations when he took to the microphone. While audience members were perhaps expecting a musical encore, Elliott explained that the Rococo Variations was the sole reason he met his girlfriend, Olive, whom he claimed ‘changed my life’.
He then asked Olive to come to the stage, where, after a few words off-mic, Elliott then went down on one knee to pop the question, amid cheers of delight and surprise.
‘Olive’s first impression of me was through a video of Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations I posted on Instagram,’ Elliott explained on social media.
‘Since then, she’s watched me perform this piece live twice, both times incredibly special for us amid our busy schedules. It was the first piece she ever saw me play in person, and it’s become a symbol of so many milestones in our story.
‘This performance was a rare chance for Olive to see me play close to home in LA… and I wanted to make it even more special.’
Congratulations to Sterling and Olive! (she said yes, by the way).
