When August Wilhelmj (1845–1908), known in the press as the German Paganini, presented a $1,000 violin to the 17-year-old Teresa Carreño Campbell in Boston in 1881, the story – by 19th-century standards – went viral. The violin, made by the German maker Louis Noebe (1839–1931) and commissioned for Wilhelmj’s own use, changed hands after he told the young performer, ‘Your violin, my dear young lady, is not worthy of you.
