Three cellists have proceeded to the finals of the Budapest International Cello Competition. They are Lionel Martin, Michael Wehrmeyer and Arne Zeller. All finalists are from Germany. 

The finals will take place on 13 September at the Liszt Academy’s Great Hall in Budapest, Hungary. The contestants will perform a concerto by Shostakovich, Prokofiev or Dvořák with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by György Vashegyi. The concerto performance will be followed by a movement of solo Bach.

The contestants are competing for a €18,000 first prize. Additional prizes include a €12,000 second prize, €6,000 third prize, the Audience Prize, a prize for the best performance of a work by Kodály, as well as future performance opportunities with orchestras.

The jury is chaired by Frans Helmerson and also comprises Anne Gastinel, András Keller, Jens Peter Maintz, Gwen Starker, Santiago Cañón Valencia and István Várdai, the competition’s artistic curator.
