This year marks the 50th anniversary of my move to Scoraig, in the far north-west of Scotland. I used to work as an experimental physicist in London, but then became friends with someone who owned a croft in this area. I already made violins in my spare time, so when I chose to retire from my London job, I decided to move to Scoraig with my wife and become a full-time luthier, and my friend gave me a part of his land. Stone was plentiful in the area, so we made our own house, garden and workshop using the local stone and second-hand timber.
