For as long as I can remember I have been interested in rediscovering forgotten cello repertoire from the 18th and 19th centuries. About 13 years ago, when I was delving further into 19th-century cello repertoire, I came across Friedrich Kiel – who was well known at the time – and his circle of composers. This led me to explore the intriguing development of cello playing at the then-named Hochschule der Künste Berlin in the late 19th century, when Kiel and Joseph Joachim were co-directors. The wider circle around Kiel revealed a wealth of repertoire by composers connected to this teaching tradition, often written in collaboration with leading cellists such as Robert Hausmann, Julius Rietz, Alfredo Piatti and Carl Schröder…
