The musician spent many years performing with period and Baroque orchestras in the Netherlands, before making her home in California’s Bay Area
The American violinist Gabrielle Wunsch died on 20 July at the age of 51 of stage 4 breast cancer. For many years she was based in the Netherlands, performing with Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht, B’Rock and the Nederlandse Bachvereniging. She was also assistant concertmaster and principal second violin with the New Dutch Academy.
Born on 6 April 1975, Wunsch studied at the Eastman School of Music and SUNY Stony Brook. She held degrees in period performance from the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, and artist diplomas from the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya and Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
She was a prizewinner at the 2010 Premio Bonporti International Baroque Violin Competition. She performed at the Utrecht, Barcelona and Göttingen festivals.
Returning to the US, Wunsch settled in California where she performed with the Santa Rosa, Monterey, Oakland, Marin and California symphony orchestras, as well as the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, and West Edge Opera.
She won a permanent position with the Fresno Philharmonic, and frequently played at the Carmel Bach Festival and the Göttingen Handel Festspiele in Germany.
