Played by Émilie Auclair, this is one of the last instruments to be made by Guadagnini, who died a year later
One of the most active foundations supporting the arts in Canada, Canimex has been loaning fine instruments to players for more than two decades. The Strad Calendar 2026 showcases twelve of these treasures, including five by Antonio Stradivari, two by Guarneri ‘del Gesù’, two by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini and – a first for the Calendar – a modern octobass.
1785 Guadagnini violin
The Guadagnini violin of 1785 comes from the end of his Turin period; in fact, the violin is one of the last instruments he ever made (he died one year later). Now played by Émilie Auclair, the instrument has a back made from a single piece of quarter-cut maple of broad flame descending from the treble side to the bass.
The sides are of maple of medium flame, while the maple used for the scroll is plainer. The top plate is of two pieces of medium-grain spruce. The varnish is of a red–brown colour.
