Dr Louis van der Watt, a well-respected string teacher in the South African classical music community, died on 30 September at the age of 67 due to a heart attack. He was a violinist, violist, organist, and conductor, as well as an academist and ordained pastor.

Van der Watt was born in the Free State province of South Africa in 1958, and completed degrees in both music and theology at the University of the Free State and Stellenbosch University (SU). He went on to become a senior lecturer in violin and viola at SU, later serving as head of the strings department.

He also served as an examiner for both the Royal Schools of Music and the University of South Africa.

The FSSO paid tribute on social media:

‘Dr van der Watt’s musicianship, professionalism, and dedication contributed significantly to the work and spirit of the FSSO. His presence enriched our orchestra, and his legacy will remain part of our musical community.

‘We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all touched by his life and artistry.’
