Three violists, including an assistant principal, and one cellist will begin in their roles this autumn
The Minnesota Orchestra has welcomed five new full-time musicians, including four string players. They will begin in their roles this autumn. Sumin Kim was named assistant principal viola, Nicholas Gallitano and Joshua Kail join as section violists and Abraham Feder joins the cello section.
South Korean violist Sumin Kim earned her bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music and her master’s degree at the Juilliard School. She has performed in the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra, where she substituted as both a violinist and violist. She also served as principal viola of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, as well as section violinist, violist and acting principal violist with the Symphony in C.
US violist Gallitano previously served as acting section viola in the Indianapolis Symphony for two seasons. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, including tours and residencies across the United States and Asia, and has performed as guest violist of the Juilliard Quartet. He holds degrees from the Juilliard School and Oberlin College and Conservatory.
US violist Joshua Kail is an alumnus of the Juilliard School and Norwegian Academy of Music, where he studied with Lars Anders Tomter. During his time there, he served as orchestral fellow with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2023 he has performed as a member of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and served as guest principal viola of the Tampere Philharmonic and the Turku Philharmonic.
Cellist Abraham Feder previously served as assistant principal cello of the Detroit Symphony, as a member of the Dallas Symphony, and as assistant principal cello of the Sante Fe Opera. He earned his master’s degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and his bachelor’s at the Curtis Institute of Music.
