Ten cellists have progressed to the next round, which will be held on 5 and 6 November in Tongyeong, South Korea

The cello semi-finalists for the 2025 Isang Yun Competition have been announced, following the first rounds held on 2 and 3 November in Tongyeong, South Korea.
From the 24 participants in the first round, ten cellists have been selected to progress to the semi-finals, which will be held on 5 and 6 November. They are:
Seungyeon Baik, Korea
Andrew Ilhoon Byun, Canada
Taewoong Chae, Korea
A-Hyeon Choi, Korea
Alex Lau, Hong Kong
Jeri Lee, Korea
Youbien Lee, Korea
Francesco Stefanelli, San Marino, Italy
Jakob Giovanni Taylor, US
Simon Tetzlaff, Germany
The semi-finalists will now be required to perform a 45-50 minute recital with piano, comprising Isang Yun’s Espace (1992), one of Beethoven’s op.102 sonatas or a Brahms sonata, plus another work from a prescribed list of pieces by Schubert, Robert Schumann, Debussy, Shostakovich and Prokofiev.
The finalists will be selected to perform a concerto on 8 November with the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra, with the chance to win prizes from a total prize pool worth KRW79,000,000 (£42,100), including first prize worth KRW30,000,000 (£16,000).
This year’s jury is chaired by Arto Noras, and comprises Clive Greensmith, Louise Hopkins, Doo-Min Kim, Kangho Lee, Troels Svane, Andreas Vierziger, Jian Wang and Hiroyasu Yamamoto.
