Meadowmount School of Music has awarded the fourth annual Gurrena Fellowship, worth $50,000, to Hong Kong violinist Hiu Sing Fan.

Fan was most recently a semi-finalist at the 2025 Premio Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy, and won second prize and the audience choice award at the 2025 Dallas International Violin Competition, as well a recent prizewinner at the Banff International String Quartet Competition.

He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University under Gerardo Ribeiro, and holds degrees from The Juilliard School and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München in Germany.

The Gurrena Fellowship, worth $50,000, was created in 2022 in memory of David A. Barnebl, an educated, passionate music lover, by his wife, Linda Gurrena Barnebl, of Shelburne, VT. The purpose of the fellowship is to support and encourage exceptionally talented students to become successful in their professional journey.

Fan will receive financial support and mentorship, as well as featured concert engagements supported by Meadowmount School of Music, plus continued collaborations and training with Meadowmount faculty throughout the faculty year and the following summer season.

Fan described receiving the fellowship as ’both a wonderful surprise and a tremendous honour.’

’I first heard about Meadowmount from my former teachers and friends, and over the past two summers I’ve been so glad to immerse myself in a place of such rich traditions, where the likes of Itzhak Perlman, Michael Rabin, and so many other great violinists once honed their craft.

’My time [at Meadowmount] has allowed me to discover potential within myself that I didn’t know was possible even at this later stage of my studies. The inspirations I’ve received each summer have continued to shape my artistry throughout the year and have helped me reach new heights in my playing.’

Janet Sung, artist director of Meadowmount School of Music said: ’We are delighted to award the 2026 Gurrena Fellowship to violinist Hiu Sing Fan.

’Hiu Sing’s playing is not only technically brilliant, but also elegant and thoughtfully compelling and it’s exciting to see him already establishing his mark on the international stage.

’All our recipients have been able to benefit from the unique opportunities of the Gurrena Fellowship, providing them performing experiences and crucial support that are tailored to their individual needs and artistic aspirations. As our fourth awardee, we look forward to working with Hiu Sing as he embarks on this next phase of his musical career.’

The previous recipients of the Gurrena Fellowship are Kento Hong, Luiz Fernando Venturelli and Sydney Lee.
